Adamantine: A durable black metal used to craft weapons and armor. These have been used somewhat inconsistently, and the term "adamantine" is now preferred for all uses. Various names have been given to adamantine metal, its ores, its alloys, and its pure form. Other forms of adamantine, such as the brittle raw adamant metal or its ore, have few practical uses except in dwarven materials research, experimental magic items, expensive engravers' tools, and pieces of jewelry. The infamous Tomb of Horrors was also built to contain an impassable door of solid adamantine, until adventurers simply tore the valuable metal from its hinges. In the world of Eberron, a House Cannith foundry beneath the city of Sharn was constructed from adamantine-plated thick steel. These include the huge adamantine golem the singular adamantine horror, leader of the clockwork horrors and the drow-built adamantine spider.Īdamantine is sometimes used in the construction of building doors when extreme security is desired. Several constructs have been built completely or partially from adamantine. Many notable magic items are made from adamantine, including Daern's instant fortress, the saw of mighty cutting, the talisman of the sphere the mace of smiting, the mattock of the titans, and the Hammer of the Dwarffather. The drow possess advanced metallurgy and are able to draw an adamantine alloy into thin, flexible strands, which are woven into a mesh to produce armor. The dwarves of many worlds craft exceptional suits of full plate armour from adamantine. Adamantine weapons are able to overcome certain creatures' resistance or immunity to normal steel weapons.Īdamantine armor is supremely resistant against damage, and virtually unbreakable. The best adamantine arms and armor are as potent as magic weapons. Weapons made from adamantine are exceptionally hard and durable, and are able to smash solid objects with ease. Due to its high price and the difficulty of working the metal, adamantine equipment is almost always worked by a master craftsman. ![]() UsesĪ major use of adamantine is in the construction of weapons and armor. This is dismissed as a folk tale by experts, including the dwarves who closely guard the secrets of working the difficult metal. Very high temperatures are required to work the metal.Ī once popular myth claims that adamantine is produced by alloying steel and mithral, or even silver and electrum with adamantine ore. Despite this, it is often worked by the talented smiths of subterranean races, most notably the expert dwarves and the skillful drow. Pure raw adamant can occasionally be found in spheres trapped within solidified lava flows, where it must be processed to produce adamantine metal.Ī human legend states that in its pure form, raw adamantine is so hard that no being other than the Greek god Hephaestus can work the metal. The term "adamantine ore" is now more commonly used to avoid confusion. The mineral ore of the metal is sometimes termed adamantite, although this name was also historically used to refer to the refined metal. The only known sources of adamantine are meteorites which have impacted the earth, and rare mineral veins in areas saturated with magic. Weapons made from adamantine do not dull or chip with use. Once it has been cooled, adamantine cannot be deformed or bent by mundane means. It has a glossy black appearance, and has the unique property that reflections seen in it glow with rainbow edges. Unprocessed adamantine, termed adamant by some sages, is hard but brittle, and unsuitable for use as a weapon. It is ferromagnetic like steel, and vulnerable to a rust monster's grasp. In its finished form, adamantine metal reflects a clear green sheen under candlelight, and purple-white under magical light.Īdamantine weighs as much as steel. Adamantine is an extremely hard, black metal. ![]() And while they were happily choosing ‘current and trendy’ finishes, my client, who was obviously older and had already lived through a few trends in previous houses, was totally on board with choosing ‘timeless’ finishes and colours. She was building a home on the same property as her son and his wife. I recently consulted with a client on her new build. Timeless stands in opposition to the relentless need to renovate in order to keep up with whatever is current.Īnd the reason why I think it’s a ‘movement’ more than simply a Maria Killam aesthetic, is because once people find my blog and start reading my advice, they realize it just makes sense. A fresh backdrop for colour is timelessĪ fresh and versatile canvas, that is, a home with simple timeless wood floors and lots of fresh white and cream finishes, is the perfect TIMELESS backdrop for COLOUR. The more hard finishes you have installed in neutral colours other than white or cream, the more difficult it is to decorate with COLOUR. You cannot choose a colour that doesn’t already exist in the multicolour stone on the house above because it would not relate. Maria Killam – The Shortcut to Testing Colour: Before and AfterĪ key insight to my system is that neutrals need to RELATE WELL to look right. Like this exterior below with lots of earthy stone. A home exterior with lots of earthy stone or brick, for example, is one that simply cannot handle a colour because you can’t ignore those finishes. That is why you will see many posts dealing with choosing the right neutral colours to relate to fixed elements such as existing earthy countertops, tile, stone or brick – even Carrara Marble has an undertone. A neutral does not simply go with everything At least for a gal so very in love with COLOUR.īecause neutrals are where people need the most help. The thick and heavily furred tail of this animal is multifunctional.Hence, these animals weren't hunted for centuries thanks to this mistaken belief. Due to the habit of spreading their legs to sunbathe, the Red ruffed lemurs were considered by early native people of the area as sacred animals, worshipping the sun. These two above mentioned subspecies occasionally interbreed, yielding an offspring with black, white, and red coloration. These two animals recognize warning signals of each other, which help them to avoid threats. When threatened, Red ruffed lemurs emit alarm calls that are heard and recognized by their co-subspecies, the Black and white ruffed lemurs.Along with well-developed senses of smell, vision and hearing, these lemurs are able to identify group members by scent glands, found on their rump. The second toe on each of their hind foot has a special claw, helping the animal brush its long and fluffy fur.Like all prosimian species, these lemurs use only their teeth when grooming because of not having extensive digit coordination. When eating nectar of deep tubular flowers, their snouts are covered with pollen, which they carry to other flowers that they consume. As Bhanusali put it: “The person you are today isn’t the person you were two years ago, or the person you will be tomorrow.” She’s also had clients try out designs before making them permanent, and others who have wanted to mark a moment-but not commemorate it on their skin forever. While some tattoo artists would never want to use ink that fades, I appreciated Anastasia’s take: She said she liked how Ephemeral Tattoo lowers the barriers to entry, introducing new people to the art form. ![]() I watched as she dipped into the black ink, and when the needle touched down on my skin, I got the same thrill-a stinging sensation that dissipated as adrenaline kicked in. Then Anastasia cleaned my skin, transferred the stencil to my ankle, and pulled out the same kind of machine used to do traditional tattoos. We discussed the size and placement of a mandala design I’d chosen because sand mandalas, like Ephemeral tattoos, are temporary. Once I met my tattoo artist, Anastasia, it was business as usual. Ephemeral designs will also cost more than most traditional tattoos, with prices starting at $195 (you can get a small, basic tattoo for about $80 in New York City). When I arrived, a customer service rep explained that Ephemeral tattoos are currently done only in black (color ink is in the works) and that all the designs must be smaller than about 4" x 4" so they can fit under a standard-size hydrocolloid patch to accelerate healing. But can you call something that is impermanent a tattoo-or is it more like makeup? And how do you choose a design that won’t last? To find answers, I decided to get an Ephemeral tattoo of my own.Įphemeral Tattoo’s Brooklyn studio feels like a high-end hair salon, outfitted with a Bird of Paradise plant, boxed water, and a plush rug. “The macrophages just can’t get in there.” But the pigment particles in Ephemeral Tattoo ink are smaller and wrapped in a polymer complex that degrades over time, releasing the color and enabling it to be passed out of the body as waste. “With traditional ink, the pigment particles are too large for your body to break down,” says Dhaval Bhanusali, MD, a Manhattan dermatologist who helped develop Ephemeral’s proprietary temporary ink. Tattoo regret was, in fact, one impetus for Ephemeral, which currently has outposts in Brooklyn and Los Angeles (with San Francisco and more locations coming soon). Many also get inked on a whim-and a not-insignificant number (28 percent, according to a survey by the market research company Dalia) say they regret doing so. ![]() We get marked to assert our personal identity, to honor our cultural heritage, to commemorate a loved one. People get tattoos for reasons as varied as the designs themselves. I conceded that there may be a place for semi-permanent adornment. I didn’t even choose the artwork for my favorite, a large floral tattoo that I got when I worked at a magazine and let readers vote on the design. I have about 20 tattoos, and not all are the result of deep reflection. But then I realized my reaction was hypocritical. Getting tattooed is a meaningful, deeply personal process, and made-to-fade artwork seemed to trivialize the art form. When I first heard about Ephemeral Tattoo, a shop that uses ink that fades in 9 to 15 months, I scoffed. ![]() The user can also create your own styles and save them for future use.
